Generally kids ages 5-8 fit best in the XS/S and ages 9-12 fit best in the S/M, but there is a lot of variability. Please measure by marking circumference with a string or ribbon, and then measure that with a tape measure. 

To ensure a perfect fit, measure the circumference of your head starting in the middle of forehead and match it with the sizes below:

XS/S : 20 – 21.25 in (51 – 54 cm) 
S/M : 21 – 22.5 in (53 – 57 cm)
